IFC and the World Bank launched the Global Agriculture and Food Security Program, a multilateral mechanism to assist in the implementation of pledges made by the G-8 and G-20 countries to strengthen food security in low-income countries.
The program will channel donor funding—more than $800 million so far—to support public and private initiatives to improve governance, productivity, and competitiveness in the agribusiness sector.
IFC will manage funding allocated for private initiatives and will provide long- and short-term loans, credit guarantees, and equity to local companies and financial intermediaries.
